That was the question posed by Cover Story in the Sept. 23 Business Week, and to help answer it for the AOL audience, the guests on Sept. 22 were the principal author of the story, Kathy Rebello, BW's San Francisco bureau chief, and two successful "Netrepreneurs," Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com Books and Jerry Kaplan of ONSALE. Both are founders and CEOs of their respective organizations.

  26. Question:  JeffBezos, aren't books a commodity? Wouldn't a competitor come in, and then it becomes a battle over price? Or can one diffentiate themselves with service?

JeffBezos:  Yes, books are a commodity, but service isn't, and you absolutely can differentiate yourself with service. There's no question, it happens all the time in the physical world, and it's going to carry over to the online world. One thing that is different is that comparison shopping is nearly frictionless online. This is something that electronic merchants are going to have to learn to deal with in the future.
